Jadon Sancho wants to continue playing for Manchester United despite looming doubts over his future at the club after publicly questioning manager Erik ten Hag. Sancho is set for showdown talks with the Dutchman and wants to stay, but he may have already dug his own grave.

Ten Hag excluded the 23-year-old winger from the travelling United squad for last Sunday’s 3-1 defeat against Arsenal.

After full-time at the Emirates Stadium, Ten Hag admitted Sancho was missing due to poor training performances, stating he slipped below the levels expected under his watch.

Shortly after, Sancho took to social media, releasing a statement effectively calling his boss a liar and claiming he had been made a ‘scapegoat’.

Sancho and Ten Hag are expected to hold showdown talks when United’s non-international players return to Carrington on Monday.

But The Telegraph report that some figures at the club are doubtful there is a way back for the No 25 after he publicly questioned Ten Hag’s authority.

Steven Gerrard’s Al Ettifaq attempted to take Sancho to Saudi Arabia before Thursday’s transfer deadline but were thwarted by United’s request for a £50million obligation to buy.

I suppose you can look at it both ways because if a manager can say what he thinks about a player in public, then a player may argue he’s entitled to respond.

“But we sort of saw this in very different circumstances with Cristiano Ronaldo, where the whole saga and fallout between Erik ten Hag, Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United played out in public.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. We know that Ten Hag is sometimes quite firm but largely seen by the Manchester United squad as fair in his actions as well.

“I think that Jadon Sancho now has to use the international break to do a bit of soul-searching, and Manchester United will deal with the situation internally. Ten Hag and Sancho will speak and try to cool things off.

“In a weird way, it might benefit Sancho because these types of incidents, and a manager calling you out for not training with the right application, almost provoke a response which might benefit all parties.

“Sancho, who still wants to stay at Manchester United, may be even more galvanised now to prove his manager wrong.”

Follow Daily Express on Threads for all the latest news
