Rory McIlroy has called on this month’s Ryder Cup in Rome to be free of the “noise” surrounding LIV Golf and the PGA Tour. The last 15 months have been unlike any other in the world of golf, following the emergence of the LIV setup.

Following its inception in June 2022, LIV has found itself battling against the PGA Tour at the top of golf’s food chain in what has been an ugly period for the sport. The drama has also appeared away from the golf course, with both sides of the argument guilty of taking swipes at their rival.

So much so that the dispute turned into a legal one, with both the PGA Tour and LIV Golf taking out lawsuits against each other in attempts to solidify each entity’s position in professional golf. Almost a year to the day of the birth of LIV – and the rivalry – a truce appeared to have been called.

This came in the form of a groundbreaking framework agreement between the PGA Tour, and LIV’s Middle Eastern backers, the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF). The proposed deal with PIF has brought an end to the battle, with the PGA Tour set to work in unison with LIV under one entity named NewCo.

Don’t miss…

Of course, this by no way means professional golf’s saga is over yet, with plenty of details still to be ironed out in regard to the deal which has a Dec. 31 deadline. McIlroy, though is hoping the noise of this month’s Ryder Cup can drown out the politics going on off the course.

As a result, the Northern Irishman has called on the matchplay event to once again bring the golfing world back together, as did the 150th British Open in July 2022. “I feel like this Ryder Cup is a bit like the 150th Open at St Andrews last year where all of that noise went away for the four days that we were playing, at least,” he said at this week’s BMW PGA Championship.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. More info

“There’s just some tournaments that in our game are bigger and more important than all of that stuff and, obviously, the Ryder Cup is right at the top of the list. So yeah, at the end of the day, it’s about competition and about sport and competing at the highest level, and that’s what the Ryder Cup is.

Amid the 15-month saga, Team Europe has been left without three of their most experienced players in Ian Poulter, Sergio Garcia, and Lee Westwood following their LIV switch. On the other side, America’s Bryson DeChambeau and Dustin Johnson are absent, with Brooks Koepka the only player from the LIV setup to earn a Ryder Cup place.
