{"id":288664,"date":"2023-09-23T08:35:56","date_gmt":"2023-09-23T08:35:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportsloveme.com\/?p=288664"},"modified":"2023-09-23T08:35:56","modified_gmt":"2023-09-23T08:35:56","slug":"france-issue-antoine-dupont-recovery-update-after-scrum-half-undergoes-surgery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportsloveme.com\/rugby-union\/france-issue-antoine-dupont-recovery-update-after-scrum-half-undergoes-surgery\/","title":{"rendered":"France issue Antoine Dupont recovery update after scrum half undergoes surgery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Antoine Dupont has undergone surgery on his fractured cheekbone <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/static-assets\/images\/newsletter\/sport\/sport-135x135.png\" width=\"134\" height=\"134\" layout=\"responsive\"><\/p>\n<h3>Sign up to our free sport newsletter for all the latest news on everything from cycling to boxing<\/h3>\n<h3>Sign up to our free sport email for all the latest news<\/h3>\n<h2>Thanks for signing up to the<br \/> Sport email<\/h2>\n<p>France have confirmed that Antoine Dupont has undergone surgery on his facial injury but could begin a \u201cgradual return to sport\u201d in the next few days.<\/p>\n<p>The hosts\u2019 captain suffered a fractured cheekbone during his side\u2019s record win over Namibia after a tackle from Johan Deysel.<\/p>\n<p>Dupont spent Thursday night and Friday in hospital, undergoing surgery on Friday night as he targets a return to action at some point during the World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>And a statement released by the French Rugby Federation (FFR) has confirmed that Dupont will make a managed return to the squad next week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Following his injury suffered during the France &#8211; Namibia match, Antoine Dupont underwent surgery on September 22 around 11pm at the Purpan University Hospital in Toulouse,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n<h3>Recommended<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2023\/08\/07\/11\/SEI166845196.jpg\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2023\/09\/06\/15\/2023-09-04T090926Z_12386583_UP1EJ940PFO14_RTRMADP_3_RUGBY-UNION-WORLDCUP-OPENING-CONFERENCE.JPG\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2022\/11\/05\/18\/AFP_32MW2ZA.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a few days, he will be able to return to the French team in a gradual return to sport under medical supervision.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Former England centre Brad Barritt played a Champions Cup game for Saracens in March 2018 only five days after undergoing surgery on his own broken cheekbone.<\/p>\n<p>However, depending on the severity of the fracture, it is thought that Dupont\u2019s injury would typically carry a four-to-six week recovery timeframe.<\/p>\n<p>That could yet allow the scrum half to return for the semi-finals, if France progress to that stage of the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>Fabien Galthie\u2019s side play their final pool fixture against Italy on 7 October, a game that Dupont is all but certain to miss.<\/p>\n<p>Bordeaux Begles\u2019 Maxime Lucu and Baptiste Couilloud of Lyon, who featured in the 96-0 Namibia thrashing, are the other two scrum halves in Galthie\u2019s squad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have three scrum-halves, and Baptiste Couilloud made an excellent start [against Namibia],\u201d attack coach Laurent Labit said of the options at France\u2019s disposal. \u201cMaxime Lucu has been with us for a long time. We\u2019ll see. We\u2019re looking ahead to the Italy game and we\u2019ll be going there with our best team.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2023\/09\/22\/09\/newFile.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Baptiste Couilloud could be a beneficiary of Antoine Dupont\u2019s injury <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have three days to recover before looking ahead to the Italy match in a fortnight\u2019s time. We\u2019re going to do what we always do. We\u2019ll get together to decide on the best team based on the strategy we\u2019ve chosen for this match. Both Baptiste and Maxime will be able to start. We\u2019ll think about it after looking at our opponents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nambia captain Deysel, meanwhile, has apologised to Dupont for the head-to-head collision that caused the injury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to extend my best wishes to Antoine Dupont. Clearly, I meant no harm,\u201d said Deysel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything happened very quickly and I couldn\u2019t get my head out of the way quick enough, resulting in a head clash.
