Fans think referee Michael Oliver “deserved a red card” after blocking Brentford’s goalscoring opportunity in their defeat to Everton.

The Toffees clinched a much-needed 3-1 win at Brentford on Saturday. It marked the first victory for Sean Dyche’s side in the Premier League this season after six games, with Abdoulaye Doucoure, James Tarkowski and Dominic Calvert-Lewin all getting on the scoresheet.

Yet there was an element of fortune involved as, three minutes after Calvert-Lewin’s goal in the 71st, the referee played a huge role in stopping the home side’s attack. In fact, Saman Ghoddos had an empty net to aim at, and the result could have played out very differently but for Oliver’s accidental intervention.

Jordan Pickford’s mis-kick found its way to Brentford substitute Ghoddos. But the Iranian’s touch hit the obstructing Oliver, meaning he couldn’t get a shot off on goal.

The official, who looked red-faced and apologetic after his blunder, immediately blew his whistle to give Brentford possession. And despite shaking the Bees midfielder’s hand, Brentford fans online were left furious as they took to social media to vent.

Brentford were unable to add to Mathias Jensen’s clinical 28th minute strike for the remainder of the game. They dropped to 13th in the table while Everton climbed up to 15th, two points behind the west Londoners.
