Roger Federer was not pleased with being put on the spot by Frances Tiafoe at the Laver Cup, with the Swiss jokingly branding him ‘annoying’. A question on who would play Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal in a Hollywood film seemed to stump the 42-year-old, who was interviewed with an audience at the tournament that rounded off his professional career 12 months ago.

Team World have built up a commanding lead at this year’s Laver Cup, thanks in part to Tiafoe’s latest win. The American defeated big-serving Pole Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets on Saturday night, sparking celebrations from his team-mates.

Before he got down to business, Tiafoe took part in a question and answer session with Federer, who co-founded the Laver Cup and called time on his career by playing doubles at the tournament last year.

Smirking, the 25-year-old asked Federer who would play him, Djokovic and Nadal if a Hollywood film was made about his life.

I don’t know!” The audience then cracked up laughing when Federer suggested that he would choose Leonardo Di Caprio for himself.

“And then Novak and Rafa… this is tough,” he continued. “Maybe Matthew McConaughey for Novak, and for Rafa… Antonio Banderas! That’s a tough question.”

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. Team World came out on top to end Federer’s career on a defeat, but Tiafoe insists that the result of the match was not important.

“Me and Jack were joking, should we go hard, should we not, should we make it a good show? I’m glad we went out there and played hard,” he told The New York Times. “The result was so irrelevant. Tennis won that night.”

After the match, Tiafoe told Federer: “Thank you for the last 20-plus years. Thank you not only for your on-court play, but for who you are as an individual. What you’ve done will never die.”
