Ajax's big clash with Feyenoord was abandoned after angry fans launched flares on to the pitch.

The fierce rivalry was renewed on Sunday with Feyenoord waltzing in to a 3-0 lead inside the first half. And furious home supporters were not taking the humiliation lying down.

Instead, they threw objects on to the pitch with the game temporarily paused in the first half, and fans were even seen breaking back into the stadium following the early abandonment. As the carnage continued into the second half, the referee made the decision to call the match off 55 minutes in.

After play was stopped, a short social media statement from the Eredivisie read: "The Classic is permanently stopped after repeated fireworks on the field. More information about how to complete this match will follow later."

Ajax have struggled this season, tasting victory just once in the Eredivisie. Feyenoord, meanwhile, are top of the table having won all five of their matches ahead of Sunday's fixture.

Santiago Gimenez opened the scoring before bagging his brace. Brazilian star Igor Paixao bagged Feyenoord's third as scenes turned ugly at the stadium.

Fans continued to demonstrate their fury even after match was abandoned. Footage on social media shows irate Ajax supporters seemingly vandalising the stadium as smoke bombs and flares were lit, while riot police on horses were also seen charging at fans outside of the ground.

As supporters caused carnage around the stadium, police were forced to use tear gas in an attempt to calm things down. Though footage shows angry Ajax fans forcing their way back into the ground as their frustration builds.

Ajax manager Maurice Stein has come under fire for Ajax's poor form this season, with the side currently down in 13th place. Meanwhile, technical director Sven Mislintat, formerly of Dortmund and Arsenal, has also received heavy criticism.

The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) will now discuss how the remaining 35 minutes will be played. Ajax have another home game in three days' time against FC Volendam.
