Ange Postecoglou says he has grown out of supporting Liverpool, insisting: ‘I used to love Happy Days back then, too, but I don’t have posters of The Fonz on my wall now.’

Tottenham’s manager admitted he was a fan of Liverpool in his youth as he grew up in Melbourne, Australia, and is now set to go up against Jurgen Klopp’s men on Saturday.

Both teams are unbeaten in the Premier League and Postecoglou took a trip down memory lane at his press conference Friday: ‘It was the Seventies. You went one or two ways. They only used to show Liverpool or Manchester United back then.

‘I had a couple of mates who went the United way so I went with Liverpool to make it interesting. Like any kid, I had the posters up on the wall. Liverpool was my team, but you grow up, things change. I used to love Happy Days. But I don’t have posters of The Fonz on my wall now. That’s how it goes.’

Brennan Johnson is set to miss the match with Liverpool but Son Heung-min and James Maddison should be fit after returning to training. When one reporter asked if he should include Maddison in his Fantasy Football team, Postecoglou quipped: ‘Mate you can do whatever you like. It’s of zero interest to me.’

Ange Postecoglou admitted to being a Liverpool fan as a child but shared that he had grown up

The Australian manager used Henry Winkler’s character The Fonz (centre left) for his nostalgia-tinged analogy

Both Son Heung-min and James Maddison are back in training after picking up knocks in the north London derby

On the challenge of Klopp’s Liverpool, Postecoglou added: ‘They’ve been a very good football team for a while now. The elements of who they are as a football team have always been there.

‘They bring something different to other teams in the league in the way they play. It will be a good test for us in trying to impose our football. Klopp is an outstanding manager.

‘They believed in something and they’ve allowed that to grow, because they believed that was the way they would get success. The short-term success didn’t come straight away, but they saw what Jurgen was building.’
