A former Premier League STAR who has racked up £23million in transfer fees picked the perfect moment to score his first Wrexham goal.

Steven Fletcher, 36, joined the recently-promoted League Two club on a free transfer in early September after being released by Dundee United at the end of last season. Fletcher played for the likes of Wolves, Sunderland, Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke earlier in his career before becoming the ambitious north Wales club’s latest high-profile signing.

The Scot has had wait for his first goal for the Dragons, having come off the bench in his first three appearances. He was on the bench again for the home game against Crewe.

With his side 3-2 down – and having been down to 10 men since the 36th minute following Ryan Barnett’s red card – Fletcher was sent on with 14 minutes of regulation time remaining. Wrexham appeared to be heading for a valiant defeat until, in the fifth minute of added time, Fletcher produced a brilliant diving header to make it 3-3.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said the club would appeal against Barnett’s red card, shown for a late challenge on Shilow Tracey.

“There was immense character from the lads,” said Parkinson. “In the second half I thought we were the better team and had some great chances. If we had not got the draw it would have been an injustice and I’m actually disappointed we didn’t win it given we had 10 men.

“It was an exciting game with lots of talking points. Even if we hadn’t got that goal I would still have been proud of the way the lads played today.”

Parkinson also praised Fletcher’s fellow striker, Paul Mullin, who scored Wrexham other goals either side of half-time. Mullin played following a family bereavement. He added: “It has been a tough week with a family bereavement so I’m pleased for him. He was firing on all cylinders and with the two goals I don’t think there are many players who would produce moments like that at this level.

“The sending off was a very poor decision. It was never a sending off. It was the fourth official who gave it. It was a low challenge that wasn’t endangering the player. We will appeal that straight away.”
