Tottenham have released a statement condemning the racist abuse that their defender Destiny Udogie was subject to after their 2-1 win over Liverpool on Saturday. The left-back was involved in some contentious decisions that saw Diogo Jota sent off for the Reds, before such abuse was directed to the left-back on Instagram.

Udogie was targeted online after being involved in both of Jota’s fouls that led to the Portuguese forward being sent off, which prompted the abuse as several monkey emojis were left in the comments of Udogie’s post on Instagram.

Tottenham then released a statement against the abuse that one of their players was sent, which in full read: “We are disgusted at the racist messages directed towards Destiny Udogie on social media following Saturday’s game against Liverpool. We will work with the Premier League and, where possible, take action against any individual we are able to identify. We stand with you Destiny.”

Premier League chiefs have pledged to take action against Udogie’s social media abusers, having previously helped other professionals track down offenders in order for them to be prosecuted.

JUST IN Tottenham in danger of having transfer for Harry Kane replacement ‘hijacked'[TRANSFERS]

The Premier League said: “Racism or any form of discrimination will not be tolerated by the Premier League. We will continue to work alongside clubs to ensure cases are reported and investigated and offenders face severe consequences.”

Udogie posted a bible verse on Instagram after Spurs controversially defeated Liverpool, as the visitors to north London had two men sent off and Luis Diaz saw his goal wrongfully be ruled out for offside – which has since seen the PGMOL apologise.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. If God is for us, who can be against us?”

But he was met with a number of racist messages that has since been condemned by Spurs, as the club and Premier League are set to help the 20-year-old take action while offering him the necessary support.

Troy Townsend, head of player engagement at anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out said: “No amount of controversy or high emotion surrounding a game can ever warrant this abhorrent outburst.

“We are extremely concerned that players are being continually targeted on social media following games in the worst possible terms and it is vital that those responsible are held to account. High-profile players have been targeted almost every weekend since the season began in August.

“This worrying trend is a sad reminder of how much work remains to combat discrimination in football, and it is vital that social media companies help address this problem with the seriousness it requires. We have received several reports regarding the racist abuse targeting Udogie and have shared these reports with the relevant authorities.”

Tottenham’s new all-white kit doesn’t deviate from the traditional Spurs style.
