Former Wimbledon star Robbie Earle wants to see Jadon Sancho show some initiative to turn his fortune around at Manchester United by knocking on Erik ten Hag’s door to begin his redemption journey. Sancho has been out in the cold at United after his explosive social media post in retaliation to Ten Hag’s public putdown of the winger.

Sancho claimed in a now-deleted post that he had made out to be a ‘scapegoat’ at United with the attacker being taken out of first-team training ever since. Ten Hag has put the onus on Sancho to regain his place in the struggling United team.

But reports have indicated that the England star is refusing to apologise in an ugly stand-off at United. While the Sancho saga has been ongoing, United have been struggling for form on the pitch.

And Earle, who made 284 appearances for Wimbledon as part of the ‘Crazy Gang’ before retiring in 2000, believes Sancho should see this as the perfect opportunity to “get off his backside” and change the narrative. He said on The 2 Robbies podcast: “Why isn’t Jadon knocking on his [Ten Hag’s] door tomorrow morning, having seen the game and watched, and saying ‘gaffer I’ve made a mistake, I can help you get out of this situation, what do I need to do?’

“As professionals in the game we’ve all had fallout with managers, and had to have difficult conversations.” He added: “Jadon Sancho, get off your backside, go and see the manager, and get playing again for Manchester United.

“The only thing I would say, if he does get back in the team, he hasn’t been playing that well so I don’t know if he makes the first 11. If I was his team-mate, I’d try and go out and have a bit of dinner and say ‘Jadon, you’ve got to go and do this right.’

“‘It’s a stain on your career and your reputation. You’re at Manchester United football club.'” Earle’s comments echo the view from former United star Dimitar Berbatov, who has been left disappointed that the saga has been made public.

I’m very disappointed that a situation like this has been made public and a lot of people are discussing it. Things like this happen often, but they’re not made public.

“Players will fight with their managers, players, club staff, or even themselves, but it’s not often made public. When it’s connected to a big club like United, then people will talk about it and interpret it differently.

“In this case, Sancho has been there for over two years and it’s still not working out for him. Sancho must know this, too, and maybe that’s where his dissatisfaction is coming from. When you know you’re not producing, you can be angry with yourself and your manager and this can lead to a bust-up like this.”
