John McGinn has delivered a stark insight into the ruthless methods that Unai Emery has used to transform Aston Villa.

When Emery took over from Steven Gerrard a year ago, Villa were staring at a relegation battle.

The former Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain boss turned things around to such a degree that Villa finished seventh and qualified for the Europa Conference League.

Despite a significant injury list this season, Villa have won five of their opening seven league games and were three points off the top at the start of this weekend’s fixtures.

Emery takes his side to Molineux for a West Midlands derby against Wolves on Sunday.

Unai Emery has transformed the fortunes of Aston Villa since taking over 12 months ago

McGinn has retained the captaincy under Emery and has been one of Villa’s most improved players during his tenure. The Scotland midfielder said: ‘He dreams the same way we dream.

‘He is patient when it comes to his ideas and tactics, but he is the same as us: he wants to win and he wants to win now. You can see that with how ambitious he is, the signings he is making.

‘It’s up to us as players. You either get on board with it, get on the train and improve to a level where he wants to get to, otherwise you’ll be shifted out and we’ve seen that already. Hopefully I can keep improving and keep being part of that group.’

The new five-year deal for Ollie Watkins, who was recalled to the England squad this week, is another feather in Emery’s cap.

Villa announced the contract on Friday, which has pushed Watkins alongside top earners like Emiliano Martinez, Tyrone Mings and Moussa Diaby.

Yet it won’t be easy for Villa at Wolves, who had a difficult summer but have been hugely encouraged by last weekend’s 2-1 win over Manchester City, which broke the champions’ 100 per cent win record.

Villa have lost on their last two visits to Molineux and were outplayed on both occasions.

McGinn warned: ‘We need to bottle the feeling of the last couple of times we’ve been there. We haven’t beaten them there since the Covid era when there were no supporters there.

Villa have made a confident start to the season, winning five of their opening seven matches

Ollie Watkins penned a new contract last week in another major boost for the club

‘They don’t mind rubbing it in our faces when they get three points there so I’ll be letting the new lads know it’s a very tough place to play. The fans get right on your back and it’s really important for both sets of supporters.

‘So we need to be at it. We need to roll up our sleeves and be ready for the battle and show our qualities in the end, which we have been showing in the league.’

Wolves will hope for another inspirational display from Pedro Neto following the winger’s fine start to the season. Two serious knee injuries curtailed Neto’s progress but he looks reborn under O’Neil and has a goal and four assists already.

O’Neil said: ‘You’re pleased when everybody does well, but when someone as committed and enthusiastic and willing to work as Pedro is gets some success, you’re really pleased for them. He’s been a huge positive since I’ve walked in.’
