Rafael Campos has earned himself a PGA Tour card in dramatic fashion, after edging into the Korn Ferry Tour’s top 30 thanks to a penalty from one of his rivals. Campos was aiming for a return to the PGA Tour in the Korn Ferry’s season-ending event at Victoria National Golf Club.

The top 30 from the event came away with a sacred PGA Tour card for the following season, and to edge into the cut line, the Puerto Rican knew he had to sink a putt on the final hole of the week. Agonizingly, Campos rolled his putt wide of the mark and was visibly distraught at his costly miss.

Just 20 minutes later though his fortunes quickly changed as he was bumped inside the all-important top-30 thanks to a costly error from one of his fellow players. Shad Tuten was the player in question after he was issued a two-stroke penalty following his round.

Tuten was adjudged to have gone through the incorrect procedure of lift, clean, and place on the 15th fairway. The American’s loss turned out to be Campos’ gain, in what proved to be a remarkable ending to his week and season.

Don’t miss…

Campos revealed it had been a grueling campaign out on the course and after his change in fortune, broke down in tears when learning he had done enough to earn his card. “God. I just want to thank … I just want to thank my sponsors, my family, my wife … my friends that came out this week, my team, God. It’s tough,” Campos said.

“I’m tired, it has been a long year, a lot of work. To tell you the truth I am just really happy to finish in the position I am in right now. Oh, what a tough year. The last hour and a half it has been a lot of emotions, coming in and out a lot of thoughts.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. I was there 20 minutes ago.

“I’m just happy I have another chance to go back to the PGA Tour.” The man in 31st was Argentina’s Jorge Fernández Valdés, whilst Tuten’s error at the 15th fairway saw him slip back to 32nd in the standings.
