Chelsea star Malo Gusto has admitted that he and fellow right-back Reece James are in a ‘war’ to clinch the starting berth at Stamford Bridge. Mauricio Pochettino faces an unenviable selection call when both players are fit and firing, and the Argentine must execute a careful balancing act to keep the pair happy.

Gusto was snapped up by the Blues in January, completing a £26million transfer before spending the rest of the season back on loan at Lyon. After joining up with his team-mates in the summer, the Frenchman’s first few appearances in the Premier League have shown him to be an intelligent purchase.

The 20-year-old is still serving a three-match ban for a red card he received against Aston Villa last month, but France bosses are seemingly convinced enough by what they have seen to call him up to the senior international side for the first time.

Having convened with Les Bleus this week, Gusto gave RMC an insight into the battle for first-team minutes with James at right-back.

On the pitch, it’s war, he knows it very well, we don’t necessarily give each other any favours and it’s the best who will simply play.”

Gusto has been given plenty of opportunities this season with James still recovering from a hamstring issue. The former Lyon ace has already notched two assists in only five Premier League starts.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. And further promising performances will land Pochettino with a real head-scratcher when it comes to naming his team, with club captain James facing a fight to make the starting XI.

The Blues made a rocky start to the campaign under Pochettino, but a run of three consecutive wins has raised spirits going into the international break. Gusto feels that he has taken his career up a notch since arriving at Stamford Bridge.

“You feel like it’s another level,” he continued. “Starting your career at Lyon is something big, something I’ve always dreamed of. But when you arrive at Chelsea, with a locker room like that, it’s strong.

“When you are a young player, you try to fit in as best as possible and show that you can play. Little by little with the team, we are trying to create a real group that will move forward together to put Chelsea back where they need to be and win everything.”
