Steve Thompson resigned as Oldham Athletic\u2019s interim manager after his position became untenable.<\/p>\n
The 58-year-old spent just three-and-a-half weeks at the helm, assisted by Neil Redfearn, and left the Latics following a meeting with the club\u2019s hierarchy on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Thompson took over from David Unsworth last month and his six-game spell in charge ended in three victories and three draws.<\/p>\n
That run has put Oldham within touching distance of the National League playoff places but the former Preston No 2 handed in his resignation after talks about the club\u2019s future.<\/p>\n
\u2018We would like to place on record our thanks to Steve and Neil for their work in taking charge of the first team during recent weeks,\u2019 an Oldham statement read.<\/p>\n

\u2018An announcement in relation to the managerial position will be made in due course.\u2019<\/p>\n
Micky Mellon and Gary Bowyer are among the names linked with taking the reins permanently, while Thompson will not be returning to his former role as head of recruitment.<\/p>\n
