One of Sir Alex Ferguson’s biggest heroes at Manchester United will soon be playing a sold-out music tour after making a surprise career change following his retirement. Eric Cantona announced his switch to the world of music back in June and is preparing to release his debut album before embarking on his first UK tour later this year.

Cantona established himself as one of the Premier League’s most iconic stars during his time at United, winning four Premier League titles in five seasons at Old Trafford. He also made the headlines for the wrong reasons at times, including when he infamously kicked a fan against Crystal Palace to earn a lengthy FA ban.

Things are looking very different for Cantona now, though, with the Frenchman thoroughly enjoying his new venture as a musician. He released his debut single, titled The Friends We Lost, back in June and won fans over as he sang about ‘laughing and drinking with the vampires’ in a moody music video.

Cantona is now preparing to release his debut album, I’ll Make My Own Heaven, later this month before touring the UK and Ireland. The record is said to include a collection of ‘swaggering rock offerings’ as well as an ‘intimately psychedelic trip-hop’ number called Je Veux.

The former United striker will finish with a show at Dublin’s Liberty Hall, with all tickets for each night having already sold out.

Cantona explained his love for music after announcing his debut album, saying: “Writing is a way for me to exist, as only my existence can result in writing this way. Why start today, so many years later? Simply because I had lacked the time before.

“During lockdown, I finally managed to give the guitar a serious go, and even though I’m still a poor guitarist I felt confident enough to whip a few songs into shape.”

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. More info

Don’t miss…

The 57-year-old was previously a favourite of Ferguson at United, with former Red Devils winger Ryan Giggs explaining that he was never on the receiving end of the Scot’s famous hairdryer treatment like many of his team-mates.

“Eric got away with murder,” said Giggs in 2016. “He never got the hairdryer. We’d go to a black-tie do, my tie wouldn’t be straight or Nicky Butt’s top button undone and he’d [Ferguson] rip into us.

“The next minute Eric would walk in with a white linen suit and red trainers and Sir Alex would turn to us and say” ‘Look at that, that’s style!’ Me and Nicky would be going to each other” ‘For f***’s sake!'”

Want the latest Premier League news as we publish it on Express Sport?
