Lewis Hamilton was spotted rearranging his nether regions at the US Grand Prix – leaving fans joking to about Mercedes’ porpoising nightmare.

After crashing out of the Qatar Grand Prix at the first corner a fortnight ago following a collision with team-mate George Russell, Hamilton has been on fire in Austin this weekend. He qualified third for tonight’s grand prix before finishing second behind world champion Max Verstappen in last night’s Sprint.

Preparation is key ahead of any F1 session, be it practice, qualifying or a race. And Hamilton made a point of making sure everything down below was where it should be as he got into his car before the Sprint.

The moment was spotted by a host of fans, with one pointing out: “Lewis Hamilton adjusting his balls before the sprint race.” Another quipped: “This is to reduce porpoising.” A third suggested: “Or not to snag his Prince Albert.”

Porpoising is the bouncing phenomenon that has afflicted cars following F1’s seismic regulation changes ahead of the 2022 season. Mercedes were hampered by the problem more than most before eventually getting on top of the issue in the second half of the season.

Hamilton will be rearranging his crown jewels again later as he looks to secure his first win of the season from third on the grid in Austin. Despite starting sixth, Max Verstappen, who led the Sprint from start to finish, still looks to be the man to beat.

“Starting sixth will be different to today, but it makes it interesting and hopefully we can have fun. But of course I want to win,” said the Dutchman after the Sprint.

Hamilton said: “That was a fun race. A good start down to Turn 1 and a good battle with Charles. I was trying early on to get close to Max but their pace is undeniable at the moment. I am happy we are closer, but we still have a long way to go to compete with the pace they had in the race.”
