Martin Brundle was left feeling like a spare part as he waited to catch a word with Anthony Joshua during his US Grand Prix grid walk.

As usual in the US, the grid was littered with stars of sport, screen and music – and one of the first celebs he spoke to, eventually, was the former heavyweight champion of the world. Joshua was embroiled in a conversation with a pair of astronauts which went on a little too long for Brundle’s liking.

Usually, the Sky Sports F1 expert isn’t afraid to barge his way into a conversation. But he decided to wait his turn to speak to the towering Joshua, who recently invested in the Alpine team.

Brundle waited awkwardly for almost a minute and pondered ditching the boxing superstar for another VIP. “I’m not going to argue with him,” he said at one point.

However, Brundle’s patience was eventually rewarded as he secured a couple of minutes with the British Olympics hero, who discussed his involvement with Alpine, upcoming fights and the possibility of him ever getting into the ring with Tyson Fury.

“F1 is F1, it's massive,” said Joshua. “Hopefully, Alpine can have committed supporters, like myself. By the way, it’s Alpine [pronounced Alpeene], not alpine. I’m here to raise awareness for people who don’t know enough about Alpine.”

Brundle then asked AJ about his next fight before the end of the year. He said: “We’re going to be active this year. I’ve set my goals, three times [fights] this year. We’ve still got two months of the year left and I’m still going to potentially get a fight in. End this year on a high, god willing, then go into next year and kick some more behind.”

On the chances of ever facing Fury, Joshua told Brundle: “Look, I’ll be honest, for me personally, I’m here for the fans and I know what they want. And my job is to deliver.

“I will 100% do my end of the bargain. It’s up to the other team to play ball. But one step at a time. December, I want to get out. April, I need to be victorious, then we can talk about the big fight in the future.”
