Peter Schmeichel went wild celebrating Andre Onana’s last-gasp penalty save in Man United’s 1-0 win over Copenhagen on Tuesday night.

Harry Maguire had given the hosts the lead at Old Trafford with a powerful header, but the Red Devils conceded a stoppage time penalty which threatened to jeopardise the victory.

Onana was able to place himself to make a great save to deny Copenhagen an equaliser, and secure Man United’s first Champions League win of the season.

TNT Sports, who broadcast the game in the UK, shared footage on X (fka Twitter) of Schmeichel celebrating the work of the Cameroonian goalkeeper, who was signed in the summer for £47m.

The Danish ex-goalkeeper and Man United legend was seen cheering, punching the air and clapping as his former club held onto all three points in dramatic circumstances.

Schmeichel later spoke to Onana, hailing him as a ‘hero’ for his last-gasp save to win the game

After the match, CBS Sports pundit Schmeichel was sent to speak one-on-one with Onana, which was also shared on the social media platform.

Onana said: ‘For me, for the club, for the team it was important. It was an important victory for us, difficult game against a very good team. The most important thing today was to win, so I’m happy for the victory, but but we have to move on.’

Explaining his feelings in the moment, the 27-year-old said: ‘Be myself, being calm, try to deal with the pressure. Old Trafford is not easy for the opponent. I made myself bigger, and I decided to go to the left.’

When Schmeichel described Onana as a hero, the Cameroonian replied: ‘I don’t think so. I think the hero tonight is Harry, he scored the goal, he gave us the victory today.’

Onana also spoke about how Man United have to ‘keep going’ and ‘get ready’ for an ‘important’ game at the weekend, with the Manchester derby looming on Sunday afternoon.

Onana dismissed claims he was the hero, instead calling Harry Maguire the star of the night

The Danish pundit said that Onana was being ‘too modest’ over his involvement in the drama

Man United’s win over Copenhagen moves them above the Danish champions in the group, with Bayern Munich top on nine points, and Galatasaray on four points.

Onana said: ‘Not the penalty, I think the victory will give us more confidence. When you win, you get more confident. You can save how many penalties you want, but if you don’t win the game, you don’t feel so good.

‘We’ll be ready to face Manchester City because they’re a good team, and we’ll be ready for that.’

Schmeichel concluded the interview by describing Onana as being ‘too modest, but also the hero’.
