Jon Jones is out of his UFC 295 showdown with Stipe Miocic having suffered a nasty injury in training.

Dana White revealed that the man many regard as the greatest ever fighter will be sidelined for eight months and Tom Aspinall vs Sergei Pavlovich will take place for the interim heavyweight title on November 11.

The UFC president said: ‘Jon Jones was training last night, got injured, he was wrestling and he tore the tendon that connects your pec to to the bone, off the bone. [Out] eight months, going to need surgery. He’s out.’

Jones had eyed his bout with Miocic as potentially the last of his decorated career.

Jon Jones has been ruled out of UFC 295 with an injury and the bout has been replaced

Sergei Pavlovich has been confirmed as the backup fighter for this weekend’s UFC main event

It remains to be seen now whether Jones will forge his long path back to the fight after extensive surgery and rehabilitation.

Although it is a massive blow for the promotion and for Jones, the opportunity for Aspinall is significant.

He roared back into the win column with victory over Marcin Tybura in London this March and a fight with the fearsome Russian, Pavlovich, is a worthy co-main event in New York.

The new main event is Jiri Prochazka vs Alex Pereira in a mouth-watering light-heavyweight title fight.

Jones made his long-awaited return to action earlier this year, roughly three years after vacating his light-heavyweight crown to move up a division.

He had won a record 14 title fights and is now on a 19-fight unbeaten streak having beaten Ciryl Gane for the vacant heavyweight belt.

Jones was suspended for a year in 2016 for a failed drug test and had his 2017 victory over Daniel Cormier turned into a no-contest after another drug test came up positive.

Jones demolished Ciryl Gane back in March this year with a first-round victory

Aspinall connected with almost everything he threw at Tybura in his win back in March

The United States Anti-Doping Agency changed the criteria for what constitutes a positive test in 2019, and Jones let it be known he would have passed under the revised standards.

Miocic is a former two-time heavyweight champion who last fought when he dropped the belt to Francis Ngannou at UFC 280 in March 2021.

It remains to be seen when fans will next see the Cleveland fighter in action.
