Manchester United and England great Sir Bobby Charlton dies aged 86

FC Copenhagen players and staff believe Manchester United forward Alejandro Garnacho should have shown a red card for his “childish, baby-level antics” during Tuesday’s Champions League clash. Byens Hold boss Jacob Neestrup has called for referees to crack down on players scuffing the penalty spot after Garnacho appeared to deliberately tread on the spot in an attempt to throw off Copenhagen forward Jordan Larsson’s strike.

The Danes were awarded a penalty deep in stoppage time after Scott McTominay was pulled up for a high boot. However, under-fire shot-stopper Andre Onana managed to pull off a spectacular save to secure United all three points.

A headed goal from Harry Maguire at the three-quarter-way mark gave United the lead before Onana’s heroics ensured a 1-0 victory for Erik ten Hag’s side. The victory lifts United off the bottom of their Champions League group as they leapfrog Copenhagen into third.

It keeps United’s hopes of progression into the knockout stages alive following back-to-back losses to Bayern Munich and Galatasaray in their opening group-stage games. But Garnacho’s actions leading up to the dramatic last-gasp penalty have come under fire.

Former Arsenal loanee Kim Kallstrom labelled Garnacho’s actions as “childish” and “baby-level” while Copenhagen skipper Viktor Claesson described his behaviour as “unsportsmanlike”. Manager Neestrup was also disgusted by Garnacho’s conduct and called for more to be done to prevent players from doing the same.

“It is up to referees and associations to set limits,” he told VG “All you have to do is give a red card for something like that, then people stop doing it.”
