Everton are facing a record-breaking 12-point deduction for allegedly breaking Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

The Toffees are said to have breached the Premier League's financial regulations and, if found guilty, could be slapped with a 12-point penalty. If Everton are handed the most severe punishment, they will be bottom of the Premier League on -5 points as the table stands.

Sean Dyche's side have narrowly avoided the drop for the past two seasons, and such a punishment in either season would have sent them down. The Toffees look set to be involved in another relegation battle this time around.

Dyche's side are currently 16th in the table, however they are only three points above the drop zone. Everton have only accumulated seven points all season – five less than their potential punishment.

If Everton are to face the 12-point deduction, the Toffees would find themselves 11 points from safety. And, according to The Telegraph, the Premier League are pushing for the most severe punishment.

Everton's FFP case is currently being heard by an independent commission after they recorded losses of £371.8million over a three-year period – well over the Premier League's £105million threshold.

However, the report states that Everton believe they have complied with the rules and insist they will “robustly defend” their position – arguing that coronavirus related exemptions will land them in the clear. Everton could also face less severe punishments – such as a fine or a transfer embargo.
