Former Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips has told Mykhaylo Mudryk that the winger needs to maintain his recent form to keep his place in the team under Mauricio Pochettino. Mudryk will have been disappointed to miss out on the Blues’ recent 2-0 defeat to Brentford through a minor injury, having shown a big improvement in the past few weeks and found himself firmly in the thoughts of his head coach.

Pochettino explained that a small issue that Mudryk picked up in training this week kept him out against Brentford. Instead, Raheem Sterling was shifted to the left and Noni Madueke came in on the opposite side, but those changes did not have the desired effect and Chelsea were unable to make their possession count.

Mudryk could well return to the team either for the Carabao Cup tie with Blackburn on Wednesday or for the trip to rivals Tottenham the following Monday, with Chelsea missing his attacking impetus against Brentford. Wright-Phillips believes that after a difficult start to life at Stamford Bridge, Mudryk can continue improving after recent goals against Arsenal and Fulham.

“I think he is heading in the right direction, those two goals will help him massively and people might say the one against Arsenal was lucky – so what?” He told Express Sport via Betway.

JUST IN Nicolas Jackson in heated moment with Chelsea fan vs Brentford[SPOTTED]

“It’s in the back of the net.
