Liverpool star Luis Diaz has been told by Colombian police in a phone call that all resources are being deployed to rescue his kidnapped father.

Luis Manuel Diaz and Cilenis Marulanda were both kidnapped in Barrancas, La Guajira, Colombia on October 29, after they were stopped in their car at a petrol station and taken by two gunmen on motorbikes.

Marulanda was rescued by police at night, but his father still remains missing. Colombia’s interior minister has deployed over 100 troops to the mountainous area at the north of the country and word has also been sent to Venezuelan authorities. The army has said they are setting up roadblocks, deploying motorised platoons and using helicopters in the search from above.

While Police director William Salamanca said he told Diaz on the phone that he would be deploying all of his available resources to find his father, who remains with the kidnappers.

Colombia’s Attorney General Francisco Barbosa told reporters on Sunday that it was possible that Diaz’s father has been taken into neighbouring Venezuela. And ordered an investigation to look into motives behind the kidnapping and find those responsible.

He said: "We have information that he could, at some point, be in Venezuela. If he ends up crossing the border and he’s in Venezuela, we have to ask [Colombia] President Gustavo Petro to help us with freeing Luis Diaz’s father.”

Diaz was absent from Liverpool’s squad that beat Nottingham Forest 3-0 on Sunday. After scoring the opening goal of the game, Reds forward Diogo Jota held up a printed shirt with Diaz’s name on the back in a sign of solidarity as team-mates and fans all joined in the applause in support of the number seven.

Speaking at full time, Klopp admitted it’s the most difficult match preparation he’s ever had after the news filtered through on Saturday that Diaz’s parents had been kidnapped. The manager said: “The game preparation was the most difficult I’ve ever had in my life. I didn’t expect that, I wasn’t prepared for it.

“I don’t want to make the game bigger than it was, but definitely, we tried to help Luis with the fight we put in because obviously we want to help and we cannot really help. So the only thing we can do is fight for him and that’s what the boys did. How can you make a football game really important on a day like this? It’s really difficult. I’ve never struggled with that in my life.”
