Alexander Zverev\u2019s lawyers have released a statement after the world No 9 was issued a penalty order for bodily harm against his\u00a0ex-girlfriend and fined a total of \u00a3392,000 (\u20ac450,000). Zverev has denied the charge and is contesting the penalty order. The German\u2019s lawyers said he would \u201ctake action against this using all means possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Berlin criminal courts confirmed that Zverev was issued a penalty order on October 2. \u201cThe defendant is accused of physically abusing a woman and damaging her health as part of an argument in Berlin in May 2020,\u201d the court said.<\/p>\n

A district court also imposed a fine of 90 daily rates set at \u00a34,400 (\u20ac5,000) each, totalling \u00a3392,000 (\u20ac450,000). The Berlin courts also confirmed that Zverev had \u201clodged an objection\u201d and the 26-year-old\u2019s lawyers have released a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe procedure is scandalous, there can be no question of a fair, constitutional procedure. Mr Zverev will take action against this using all means possible,\u201d they said. \u201cMr Zverev rejects the accusation made against him. The allegations made by the complainant which alone form the basis for the penalty order, have already been refuted by a forensic medical report.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Berlin public prosecutor’s office applied for a criminal order to be issued against the tennis star back in July. After a proposal is made, the court must decide whether to issue the penalty order, as they have in Zverev\u2019s case.<\/p>\n

There is then a two-week window to lodge an objection, which triggers a public trial.\u00a0 Tiergarten district court is now set to \u201chear from those involved in the proceedings again\u201d and a hearing date will likely be set afterwards.<\/p>\n
