Lautaro Martinez could be set for a new deal at Inter Milan after a stunning start to the season with the Nerazzurri.

The Argentine has had an impressive 18 months in Milan, winning the Italian Cup and Super Cup as well as lifting the World Cup with Argentina in Qatar as well as the Finalissima.

Having played a key role in winning Serie A in 2020-21, he then helped Simone Inzaghi’s side to the Champions League final last term, beating arch-nemesis AC Milan in the semis but falling to a 1-0 loss to Manchester City.

Now, though, he could be set for another contract at the San Siro despite still having another three years left on his current deal at the club following an electric start to the Serie A season.

‘We have a great relationship with the Nerazzurri. And we’re talking about getting together to talk about Lautaro’s renewal,’ his agent Alejandro Camano told FCInterNews.

‘Inter want to renew Lautaro’s contract. And we want to extend. There will be no problems. We’ll see each other in the next few days or weeks.’

But when asked whether a concrete date had been arranged for discussions, he added: ‘No, not yet. We have to reach an agreement with Inter. But the important thing is that there is a willingness on both sides to sit down and discuss the renewal.’

Martinez has already rocketed to the front of the Golden Boot race in the Italian top-flight, leading the way from cross-town rival Olivier Giroud and last year’s winner Victor Osimhen.

With 11 in 10 games, as well as an assist, he is currently averaging 1.22 goals per game, with 74 minutes per goal and a shot accuracy of an impressive 60 per cent.

As such he has become a pivotal part of the project at Inter – a project that the player is very much enamoured with, according to his agent.

‘We are talking about a very important player for Inter. And of a very important club for Lautaro. He doesn’t just count money.

‘The project, the sporting trajectory, what is happening, the fact that everything is going well, how much Inter sentiment is growing in people are also important.

‘There are various factors. Lautaro is not just about money. Lautaro also has a feeling for the club, a city that loves him and that he loves.’

The striker is thought to be enamoured with the current project at the San Siro under Simone Inzaghi

His agent claimed that Lionel Messi’s (left) retirement in the coming years could open up the field for several players to win the Ballon d’Or

With compatriot and team-mate Lionel Messi picking up a record-extending eighth Ballon d’Or earlier this week, the question of whether Martinez – still only 26 years old – could win the gong himself one day naturally arose.

Camano insisted that the world of football will ‘open up to new generations’ once Messi retires, but reiterated that the allure of money and individual records was not one that drove his client.

‘Lautaro is someone who has such a strong head that he, as that famous poet said, will be what he wants to be. Once the Messi era comes to an end, a fabulous footballer who won the Ballon d’Or eight times, the world of football will open up to the new generations.

‘Lautaro has a huge trajectory and is already a star at 26 years old. We have great faith in the future, which is why we don’t give importance to money, but to the project. Inter now have a very good one, Lautaro is happy.’
