Jack Nicklaus might be arguably the greatest golfer ever to pick up a club, but the Golden Bear may have played his last round, judging by recent comments.

American Nicklaus is the most successful player of all time with a staggering 18 major titles to his name, three more than Tiger Woods. Winning his first major at the US Open in 1962 and his last at Augusta in 1986, only Woods himself can come close to the standards that Nicklaus set during his remarkable career.

But at the age of 83, it looks like time is finally catching up with the three-time Open champion. According to the Palm Beach Post, he has not picked up a club since swinging the ceremonial tee shot at August National for The Masters in April.

The Florida resident is not best pleased with his current standard of play or the amount of the golf balls that he loses, suggesting that he is ready to call it a day altogether.

He said: “I would like to go play again… I play so poorly anymore it’s just really not any fun. And I run out of golf balls. People always say they want to play how I do. Well, now they can. In fact, I don’t think they want to play like I do.”

The six-time Masters champion confirmed his retirement from the traditional par-3 Masters contest prior to the 2022 event, stating that he “just can’t play anymore”.

Nicklaus was speaking at the Integra Connect Golf Classic Clinic at Palm Beach Gardens, helping to raise money for the Conquer Cancer Foundation.
