Leicester City and Newcastle United's Premier League 2 fixture was abandoned due to a medical emergency involving one of the Foxes' staff.

The Foxes confirmed the postponement with a short statement on X, formerly known as Twitter: "We can confirm this evening’s PL2 fixture between Leicester City Under-21s and Newcastle Under-21s at Seagrave was abandoned due to a medical emergency involving a member of LCFC staff.

"The staff member has been transferred to hospital and we await further updates on his condition." Newcastle added: "Tonight's #PL2 clash between Leicester City U21s and Newcastle United U21s has been abandoned due to a medical emergency."

The Foxes later confirmed the staff member was OK and was allowed to leave hospital, saying: "We are pleased to report that, following examination by on-site medics, the staff member has been released from observation to recover at home.

"The Club expresses its thanks to Newcastle United, to the match officials and to on-duty medical staff for their cooperation, assistance and care."

The Premier League 2 Division 1 match was taking place at the Foxes' Seagrave training ground. And Leicester had raced into a two goal lead as Will Alves returned to action for the first time since suffering an ACL injury last December.

Alves, who has been capped by the senior team, opened the scoring before Chris Popov doubled the lead. Newcastle United fought back just after the half-hour mark, thanks to a quick-fire brace from Dylan Stephenson. The game was then abandoned with the scores level.

The Magpies added on X: "Our thoughts are with the Leicester City staff member following tonight’s PL2 fixture."

Leicester's senior side were also in action against Leeds United, and the Championship side also wished the staff member well: "Sending our best wishes to the #LCFC staff member."
