Fans were left streaming for the exits after heavy winds and lashing rain descended upon the Friday qualifying session for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos.

Those winds saw the roof on one of the grandstands near the final corner of the circuit at the storied Brazilian track collapse.

Mail Sport understands that a handful of spectators had cuts and bruises but not as a result of the collapse.

The injuries were picked up as people scampered out of the rain and nobody was hospitalised.

The forecast is for better weather over the weekend but Interlagos is notorious for sudden spikes of rain.

The roof on at least one grandstand at Interlagos collapsed after a storm swept through

F1 photographer Andy Hone captured these images of the wreckage from the sudden squall

The storm led to officials cutting Q3 short – with Max Verstappen claiming pole for Sunday

Track officials say that the grandstands will be inspected before being reopened for Saturday’s sprint shootout and sprint race sessions.

F1 photographer Andy Hone, who was trackside when the collapse occurred, tweeted: ‘What a scary 10 minutes on track! A grandstand roof collapsed at the last corner and nearly got decapitated by falling debris!’

Multiple videos on social media appeared to show roofs being torn loose and blowing away. It’s unclear how many grandstands were affected by this storm.

Q3 had to be cut short as a result of this squall – with most drivers only able to complete one lap before the qualifying session was abandoned.

As a result, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen will be starting Sunday’s race on pole.
