Gary Neville blasted Destiny Udogie for making a ‘stupid’ tackle on Raheem Sterling that resulted in him being sent off in Monday evening’s crazy London derby.

Udogie had already escaped a red card in the first half after making a reckless two-footed lunge on Sterling and was instead booked for the challenge.

He was then shown a second yellow during a disastrous moment for Tottenham that reduced Ange Postecoglou’s side to nine-men after Cristian Romero was similarly sent walking earlier in the match.

Sterling was clattered by Udogie as the Chelsea star tried to hold up play and wait for reinforcements to arrive, leaving Michael Oliver with a simple decision to make.

The Spurs defender had his head in his hands as he solemnly trundled off back towards the dressing room where he would join Romero for the next 35 minutes while Tottenham battled to keep their unbeaten run alive.

Commentating on the match, Neville told Sky Sports: ‘Sterling’s initial pass is a poor one.

‘That’s just stupid. I have enjoyed the first 10 mins of the second half from Spurs but cannot believe the madness Postecoglou is watching in front of his eyes.

‘He [Udogie] knows he is on a booking, Sterling is going wide. It will be a long 35 minutes for Udogie and Romero in the dressing room.’

Gary Neville described Udogie’s sending off as ‘stupid’ after Spurs lost control of the game

The 20-year-old was shown the first red card of his career as ill-discipline crept into their match against Chelsea.

Postecoglou’s side had controlled the game during its early exchanges before a series of errors handed Chelsea a lifeline to get back into the contest.

Neville previously described Udogie as a ‘lucky boy’ for not being sent off earlier in the match, at the time stating: ‘He’s a lucky boy because that is a challenge that is universally hated.

‘He would have snapped Sterling’s leg had the Chelsea player not pulled it away.’
