Arsenal and Tottenham legend Pat Jennings was rushed to hospital after collapsing ahead of Spurs' Premier League clash with Chelsea.

The goalkeeping icon, 78, who won 119 caps for Northern Ireland, was at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the London derby, only to fall ill before kick-off. The Daily Mail reports that Jennings was assessed by medical personnel before being taken to hospital.

The report adds that Jennings, who started his career in English football with Watford in the 1960s, was feeling better later in the evening. Jennings is one of few figures held in high esteem across both sides of north London.

He made 472 appearances for Spurs between 1964 and 1977, then moving to the Gunners, where he played 237 games before leaving Highbury in 1985. He played a farewell match against Tottenham in the same year.

Jennings briefly returned to Spurs, predominantly playing reserve team games, so he could stay sharp in the build-up to the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. He also had a brief spell at Everton after being signed as goalkeeping cover for 1986 FA Cup final against Liverpool.

Loved on both sides of North London & both sides of the UK border in Ireland. I’ve met him a few times & he’s a special individual."

A third added: "I hope Pat Jennings recuperating from his collapse last night. Best wishes to the family."
