A man has been arrested over the murder of Brighton footballer Jorelyn Carabali’s brother.

Prosecutors announced the arrest yesterday as they confirmed the suspect had been remanded in custody pending an ongoing criminal probe by an investigating judge. The man held has been named as Luis Felipe Ramirez Ocampo, alias Pipe Pollo.

Jorelyn, whose team beat Women’s Super League hopefuls Manchester City in a surprise 1-0 away win at the weekend, posted a Bible verse on her Instagram as news of the arrest broke, which said: “Have faith and smile, because God loves you.”

Paulo Andres Carabali, 23, was murdered on August 14 at a nightclub in the Colombian city of Cali, just two days after Jorelyn experienced heartbreak with Colombia in their quarter-final clash with the Lionesses in Australia. He was talking with his partner when he was shot six times by a man said to have left the nightclub after a row moments earlier to look for a gun before returning. Four of the bullets hit him in the face.

Police said at the time of Paulo’s murder they believed it could be linked to his alleged work as a loan shark, an illegal moneylender who often charges very high interest rates. The suspect had also rowed with Jorelyn’s brother a year before the killing.

Confirming the arrest and remand in jail, Cali prosecution chief Sandra Eugenia Gonzalez Mina said yesterday: “The suspected killer of the brother of our Colombian international footballer Jorelyn Carabali has been detained and sent to prison pending a formal ongoing investigation.”

She added: “Thanks to the work of police and prosecutors the identity of the man who allegedly assassinated Jorelyn’s brother has been established. The victim was shot six times, four in the face.

“The evidence gathered so far points to the alleged aggressor having a row in the disco that night with the victim as well as a year ago and leaving the nightclub to get a firearm before returning and shooting him.”

She offered no more details about a possible motive for the crime and whether it was related to the alleged loansharking activities police highlighted after Paulo was killed. Centre-back Jorelyn, who signed for Brighton in September from Brazilian club Atletico Mineiro, revealed she was on a plane that was just about to take off when she found out about his murder.

She told Colombian media in August: “We were five minutes away from take-off when I got a call from my brother’s girlfriend, which I found strange. In the middle of her pain, she shouted: “They’ve killed Paulo.

“I was so stunned from the impact I didn’t understand at first what she was saying. She repeated it again and I threw the phone and began to scream.”

The 26-year-old, capped 25 times by her country, added: “My brother’s killer came to the area he was in looking for an argument. My brother didn’t want problems, because he was with his girlfriend and friends. His friends calmed him down at first, but then he carried on with the row.

“There was a scuffle and the other man said he didn’t fight with his fists. He left and went to get a gun and came back and my brother’s girlfriend screamed, ‘Paulo, run.’ He did try to save his life, but it was impossible. The only thing we want now is to see justice done.”

Jorelyn lost another brother in July 2017. Juan Francisco Martinez Arce was just 15 when he was killed on a football pitch in Cali. She wrote at the time on social media: “I still can’t get my head round the fact you’re not here little brother. I’m simply imagining you’re away travelling, and I will see you again one day.”
