Wayne Rooney is not the only member of his family capable of scoring wonder goals from the halfway line.

His younger brother John, who long been in the shadow of the Manchester United, Everton and England legend, enjoyed his moment in the limelight on Tuesday after netting a screamer from inside his own half during Macclesfield’s 1-1 draw with Basford United.

The midfielder first showed great physicality to win possession inside his own half and swiftly fired a long range effort towards goal, looping the ball past the non-league outfit’s despairing goalkeeper.

Ex-England captain Wayne, who had a reputation for scoring wonder goals during his glittering career with Manchester United, Everton, DC United and Derby, netted a similar effort for the Toffees six years ago in a 4-0 win over West Ham.

Noticing Joe Hart stranded off his goal line, the forward leapt on to the ball inside his own half and drilled it into the empty net from distance, completing a stunning hat-trick in front of his Goodison Park fans.

It was similar to the strike his older brother scored for Everton against West Ham back in 2017

Wayne also bagged a sensational strike from distance in Red Devils colours in 2014, volleying the ball into the net from just inside his own half against the Hammers.

And towards the end of his career with DC United, with what was perhaps the pick of the bunch, Wayne scored from 60 yards against Orlando in 2019.

The 38-year-old, who has turned to management since his retirement, is now the head coach of Birmingham City, having previously coached Derby and DC United in the MLS.

He has struggled to hit the ground running at St Andrew’s, yet to record a single win during his first five matches in charge.
