{"id":294618,"date":"2023-11-20T23:39:06","date_gmt":"2023-11-20T23:39:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportsloveme.com\/?p=294618"},"modified":"2023-11-20T23:39:06","modified_gmt":"2023-11-20T23:39:06","slug":"british-golfing-phenomenon-louie-6-is-following-in-woods-footsteps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportsloveme.com\/golf\/british-golfing-phenomenon-louie-6-is-following-in-woods-footsteps\/","title":{"rendered":"British golfing phenomenon Louie, 6, is following in Woods&apos; footsteps"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Meet Louie Goh, the British six-year-old following in Tiger Woods&#8217; footsteps&#8230; the youngster is a golfing phenomenon who&#8217;s just won a world title (but he did his homework first!)<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Louie Goh triumphed at the IMG Academy Junior World Championships<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The six-year-old was given a week off school to attend the competition in the US<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>He is now listed alongside previous age-group champions such as Tiger Woods\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Anybody who was present for Louie Goh\u2019s show-and-tell in front of his schoolmates in Surrey will testify that he is no ordinary six-year-old.<\/p>\n<p>Whereas most children would take in a pet or their favourite toy, Louie wowed his friends with his winner\u2019s trophy from golf\u2019s IMG Academy Junior World Championships.<\/p>\n<p>As England\u2019s first ever winner, his name is now listed alongside previous age-group champions such as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Jason Day and Tony Finau.<\/p>\n<p>Louie was given a week off school to attend July\u2019s competition in San Diego, California. He brought the trophy home with his Beanie Bear, Frank, after a two-under-par victory in a field of 23.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018As soon as he found out he won, the first thing he did was go over to the putting green to do some more putting!\u2019 his dad, Martyn, who works in advertising in London, tells Mail Sport.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/20\/21\/78035709-12772553-Louie_Goh_is_England_s_first_ever_winner_at_the_IMG_Academy_Juni-m-5_1700516031005.jpg\" height=\"611\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Louie Goh is\u00a0England\u2019s first ever winner at the IMG Academy Junior World Championships<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It was such an amazing experience. We were thinking a top-10 finish would be great because of the calibre out there. These are the best kids in the world and they invest a lot of time and money into training, especially from the Asian countries. They\u2019ve dominated the leaderboard over the last 10 years or so. I looked at the list of all the previous winners. He\u2019s the first boy from the UK. It was quite a feat.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Louie was given his first set of plastic clubs at just 18 months old. He went along with his older brother, Leo, to watch their dad at the local club and they caught the golfing bug.<\/p>\n<p>Selected for the world championships after thriving on the British Junior Golf Tour, the family combined the Stateside tournament with a trip to Hollywood. It was Louie\u2019s first time competing on international fairways, showing a temperament beyond his years as he adapted to foreign conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We knew he was good but he had never played on an international platform like that,\u2019 says his mum, Nicola, who works in a school. \u2018It was very hot, in the high 30s. We had a heat weather warning on the second day so there were all these different challenges that we\u2019re not used to here in England. Obviously the greens are very quick in America so he had to adapt, and he did.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It was lovely to see his temperament. Each night we went to bed and he was at the top of the leaderboard.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/20\/21\/78035711-12772553-The_six_year_old_sensation_shows_off_his_winning_scorecard_along-m-6_1700516122996.jpg\" height=\"621\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The six-year-old sensation shows off his winning scorecard alongside his proud dad Martyn<\/p>\n<p>A little person producing big shots, Louie plays off a handicap of 25 and has a drive of 150 yards. He is a member of Woodcote Park Golf Club in Surrey and his hobby is all funded by his family, although he was awarded a Motocaddy golf bag and trolley after his victory in the States.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019m his caddy!\u2019 says Martyn. \u2018I keep notes on how far he hits it but it\u2019s changing constantly. We\u2019ll be on a par three and he\u2019ll say it\u2019s definitely an eight iron. He\u2019s getting a lot stronger and he\u2019ll end up smashing it over the back of the green.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018If he has a bad shot he\u2019ll just do a great recovery shot. He never gets angry. He\u2019s relaxed, smiling, having fun but he\u2019s also very focused. You can see his concentration on the course, thinking about club selection and his approach to the greens.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018He hits very straight and he shoots a long way but obviously he\u2019s half the size of an adult. Anything after that drive, he\u2019s just like an adult. His short game is as good as any single-figure handicapper.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The family are Crystal Palace fans and Louie also plays football, tennis and swims. But golf is his first love and at his school\u2019s \u2018aspiration week\u2019 he told teachers that he dreams of becoming a golfer when he grows up.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018All I want to do is golf!\u2019 adds Louie. \u2018Sometimes I can\u2019t because dad\u2019s working. We\u2019ve got a putting green in the TV room. My favourite club is the putter.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/20\/20\/78035825-0-image-a-22_1700513438174.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Louie is now listed alongside previous age-group champions such as golf legend Tiger Woods<\/p>\n<p>As his trophy haul grows bigger and bigger, his parents are keen to keep things in perspective. Homework comes first and he continues to live the life of an ordinary six-year-old, watching Harry Potter with his brother and enjoying trips to their local adventure park.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018School always takes priority,\u2019 says Martyn. \u2018You play golf after you\u2019ve done your homework. We\u2019re lucky we\u2019ve got a few practice facilities within 10 minutes. Even if it\u2019s popping down to the putting green for 45 minutes until it\u2019s dark, then he\u2019ll end up crying when we have to leave!<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We just want to make sure he has fun. There are so many variables to becoming a professional.
