Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has graciously accepted the apology of a Ghanaian MP a year after being publicly ridiculed.

MP Isaac Adongo went viral after comparing the Englishman’s dismal performances to Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia’s economic management. Adongo brutally labelled the former Red Devils captain ‘the biggest threat at the centre of the Manchester United defence,” before adding: “Mr. Speaker, when you see the opponents go to score, Maguire will score for them.”

But Adongo this week backtracked and made a public apology in front of parliament in light of the 30-year-old’s surprise resurgence this season – while still taking aim at his political adversaries.

He said: “I apologise to Harry Maguire. Today he’s turned a corner and is a transformational footballer. Maguire is now scoring goals for Manchester United.

“He is now a key player for Manchester United. But as for our Maguire (Vice-President Bawumia), he is now roaming at the IMF with a cup in hand!”

And in the latest twist in a bizarre crossover between Premier League football and Ghanaian politics, Maguire has himself now taken to Twitter to respond to the apology.

He tweeted: "MP Issac Adongo apology accepted. See you at Old Trafford soon," followed by emojis of a handshake and a smiley face.

Maguire will be pleased to finally be receiving plaudits after a nightmare 2022/23 season which saw him receive swathes of abuse and criticism on social media, be stripped of his captaincy and banished to the bench. Having looked certain to leave Old Trafford in the summer, the veteran defender has played the full 90 minutes of United’s previous five league outings

His dramatic U-turn can be best summed up by his impressive performances against FC Copenhagen, Brentford and Sheffield United. The Red Devils won 18 of the last 20 games in which he started over the previous 12 months.
