Football needs to learn from another sport to help solve its refereeing crisis.

No, not rugby union when it comes to that game’s much better use of VAR. But basketball. Or the NBA to be more specific. You just need to look at how the officials in that sport dealt with what could have been a huge controversy recently.

In-form Minnesota Timberwolves took on the Golden State Warriors and chaos ensued early in the first quarter of the game. Golden State’s Draymond Green was dismissed after putting Rudy Gobert in a headlock.

Then Golden State’s Klay Thompson and Minnesota’s Jaden McDaniels were also chucked out of the game after a shoving match. The incident was such a big deal that it featured on Saturday Night Live on NBC as a skit.

But there was little controversy in the States. Why? Because the officials involved explained their decisions. They had carefully reviewed courtside monitors, made their calls and then explained them post match.

Not everyone one agreed but the manner it was done was fair and then their decisions could be properly discussed rather than just ranting and raving. There is a clamour in this country for the referees to do the same.

But what everyone seems to be asking for is for them to be dragged out in front of the cameras so the likes of Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher can shout questions at them from the studio. That is rightly being ignored by the PGMOL. They know what will happen.

The glare of the camera focusing on their staff and no doubt emotions running high from pundits would only lead to misplaced words, more rows and clips that will turn social media into a frenzy rather than solve any issues. But how it works in the NBA is so much calmer, saner and gets the right outcome – a clear and concise explanation of decisions.

One ‘pool’ reporter is elected to go to interview the main official off camera when there has been a contentious call and only then so it is not done after every single game to discuss every minor infringement. This led to the official Tyler Ford explaining to one reporter why McDaniels and Thompson didn’t stop their row so had to be dismissed and why Gobert’s actions meant he was a peacemaker in the chaos.

The quotes are then shared and sent out among all the media, the fans can read the explanations and they can at least digest why the calls were made. It may not satisfy the broadcasters who will want video and drama. But it would bring what we need and that is communication.

Gareth Southgate will no doubt feel the doubt growing around England after their recent performances against Malta and North Macedonia. But those matches were nothing more than glorified friendlies and the displays in them shouldn’t be a concern.

Where the focus should remain is how the Three Lions turn themselves into winners next summer. How do they ensure that there’s no repeat of the World Cup 2018 semi-final when they couldn’t finish off Croatia?

What can they do to dominate a side like Italy when they take the lead if they reach another Euros final? And is this England side good enough to put the French to the sword after they were seen off by them at last year’s World Cup?

Because those are the big moments which will define Southgate’s reign as England boss and if they can go all the way this summer.

Not a couple of below-par performances against two of Europe’s minnows when qualification was wrapped up.

Manchester United setting up an alumni programme for former players like Tom Thorpe who haven't made it to the top but still dream of playing professionally.

Stephen Kenny. Ireland failed to qualify for Euro 2024 when it was harder not to qualify given all the routes. Time to go.
