Arsenal legend Ian Wright has recalled staying up until 4am playing Tomb Raider with England team-mate Paul Ince.

Wright, 60, roomed with Ince, 56, when on international duty together from 1992 to 1998. The pair became the best of friends, despite Ince playing for both Manchester United and Liverpool.

When in each other's company, they would both fall back into childish ways – which included late-night gaming sessions. Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Wright said: "Me and Incey would stay up until three or four in the morning, gaming and playing Tomb Raider all night.

"He'd be trying to find ways to get out the caves and under the bloody water and stuff. I used to love being with Incey, we got really close, I love him.”

Wright went on to detail a special moment they shared, telling co-hosts Gary Neville, Jill Scott and Roy Keane about the time Ince found out he'd be captaining the Three Lions.

"Probably one of the best moments was when Glenn Hoddle knocked the door and told Incey for that game in Rome that he was going to be captain," he continued.

"I remember he came back in and I’d never seen him like that before, very emotional. He said ‘I’m captain’ and then we both started jumping on the bed like kids, it was so funny.

"You know Incey, not a very emotional guy in terms of showing emotion. But when he told that it was a beautiful moment, I felt very privileged in that respect."

Wright also started the game in question, a 0-0 draw away in Italy which secured England's qualification for the 1998 World Cup. Ince was forced off the pitch after just eight minutes following a clash of heads.

He returned to the pitch with three stitches, and later had a bandaged wrapped round the wound after it re-opened in a valiant display.
