The reasons behind Lionel Messi's move to the MLS

Sergio Aguero believes it’s only a matter of time before his close friend Lionel Messi returns to Barcelona. The Inter Miami captain spent 20 years at the Catalan club before leaving as a free agent to join Paris Saint-Germain in 2021.

Messi, 36, still has over two years remaining on the contract he signed when arriving in Major League Soccer four months ago. However, rumors still abound about the World Cup winner one day returning to the club where he spent two decades of his life.

Despite winning 35 trophies while in Spain, there is still a feeling of unfinished business due to the circumstances surrounding his abrupt departure. Messi left because Barcelona’s financial issues meant they could not register his new contract with La Liga.

That led to an emotional press conference at the Camp Nou, where a tearful Messi confirmed he would be moving elsewhere. Then, after two seasons in Paris, he moved to Miami again as a free agent.

Four months later, Aguero does not foresee Inter Miami being the last club of his career. In an interview with the Spanish sports newspaper “AS,” the long-time Manchester City striker said: “Sometimes I just think it’s a matter of time” regarding the potential of a return to Barcelona.

However, Aguero, a regular national team roommate of Messi’s, acknowledges that it is something that they “haven’t discussed.” But the retired player reiterates that “Leo always said that he loves Barcelona” and still feels “very identified with the club and city,” despite the manner of his departure two years ago.

These remarks will worry Inter Miami president and co-owner David Beckham. Only this week, he acknowledged that there were fears Messi would choose Barcelona over a move to South Florida.
