English football legend Terry Venables, 80, has passed away.

As a midfielder Venables had a solid playing career, lifting the League Cup with Chelsea and FA Cup at Tottenham Hotspur, but 'El Tel' is best remembered for his time on the touchline, where he led England to the Euro 96 semi-finals. He also managed Barcelona and Spurs, before his last top job at Leeds United in 2003.

Venables first shot to superstardom in 1984, when he took over the sleeping giants of Barca. And one of his first tasks as boss was to sell Diego Maradona, who was widely considered as the world's best player, to Napoli for a world record fee.

His first league game was against Real Madrid, where Barca dispatched their bitter rivals 3-0. It was a warning of what was to come, as Barca wrapped up their first La Liga title in 11 years.

The following campaign, Barca graced the European Cup final for the first time in 25 years, but the Spanish side lost to underdogs Steaua Bucharest on penalties.

Where do you think Terry Venables ranks in all-time English bosses? Let us know in the comments section

Venables returned to these shores in 1987 when he accepted the top job at Spurs, where he had spent time during his playing career. However, he couldn't quite replicate his Spanish success despite the presence of Gary Lineker and Paul Gascoigne.

Gazza and Venables become quite the double act, and their relationship went from strength-to-strength when he accepted the England job in 1994. England had just suffered the embarrassment of failing to qualify for the World Cup.

Venables' task was clear, avoid a second national embarrassment when hosting the Euros two years later. That summer, he had England fans believing they could win their first major tournament since the 1996 World Cup.

However, it wasn't to be, and Gareth Southgate's penalty saw England come crashing out in the semi-finals. Southgate said of Venables: "Terry opened my eyes to things that no one else has.

"He has fantastic tactical awareness. Every senior player in the group went away having learnt a lot from him, which is an achievement." Venables resigned from the role after the tournament, and he took on a number of small roles before retiring in 2003.

Venables did return briefly to football, and England, in 2007 as Steve McLaren's assistant, but he was sacked when the team failed to reach Euro 2008.

A statement from his family read: "We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness.

"We would ask that privacy be given at this incredibly sad time to allow us to mourn the loss of this lovely man who we were so lucky to have had in our lives."

Tributes have poured in for the former England boss, Tottenham Hotspur said: "The Club is extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player and manager Terry Venables.

"Incredibly sad to hear of the passing of Terry Venables today. He my dream come true of representing my country which I could never really thank him enough for," Stan Collymore added.

While Jim White shared: "Sad to hear of the passing of former @SpursOfficial, @FCBarcelona and England manager Terry Venables. Always brilliant to deal with, helpful and fair. He was 80." And Peter Reid added: "Terry Venables Legend RIP."

A minutes silence will be held ahead of Tottenham's clash with Aston Villa on Sunday.

The Englishman is still fondly remembered for his time at Euro 2016, and over on the Iberian peninsula for bringing he good times back to the Camp Nou.

Venables leaves his two daughters with ex-wife Christine McCann.
