Legendary England boss Terry Venables helped Paul Gascoigne when he was at his lowest, with the ex-Spurs star 'wanting to kill himself in a prison cell'.<\/p>\n
Football great Venables, who has died aged 80, revealed he was once summoned to London after a troubled Gazza battling alcohol and personal demons was held at a West London police station. The former Spurs midfielder turned manager said: "His stare was chilling and he frightened the life out of me. He simply said, 'I want to kill myself'.<\/p>\n
"It was an awful moment and I have no doubt he knew what he was saying. I told him I wouldn't let that happen." Venables later helped to raise funds to pay for Gascoigne's rehab, with other former team-mates and the FA.<\/p>\n

Venables, who considered Gascoigne a close friend, also put a public plea to his pal to stop drinking. Writing at the time, he said: "Something had to be done. I can't stand by and let it run until we all end up at his funeral.<\/p>\n
"Paul, if you read this, then take it as a wake-up call. You know me well enough to know this is from the heart and not something I ever dreamed I'd have to do, or say.<\/p>\n

The England superstar, who shone under Venables in Euro 96 with his iconic goal against Scotland, did check into rehab with help from his former manager for club and country.<\/p>\n
Gascoigne has spoken candidly about his battles with alcoholism in the past, adding in recent years: "I don't know if I'm ever going to touch a drink again. I just know that I'm not drinking today."<\/p>\n
