Erik ten Hag heaped praise on Bruno Fernandes for his captain’s contribution against Everton, handing Marcus Rashford the penalty in Manchester United’s 3-0 win. But Roy Keane blasted the United manager’s comments at Goodison Park, landing a reality check after the club’s best triumph this season.

The visitors received the chance to double their advantage after Alejandro Garnacho’s sensational early opener when former captain Ashley Young felled Anthony Martial in the penalty area.

Fernandes is United’s primary penalty taker but gave the ball to the low-confidence Rashford, who had scored just once before the trip to Merseyside.

The 26-year-old struck home before Martial added a late third, earning Ten Hag’s side their first league win by more than a one-goal margin this term.

Ten Hag lauded Fernandes’ show of leadership in his post-match interview. “You see how great a captain Bruno is. Bruno would net, definitely, but he has the confidence in Rashy,” the Dutchman said.

But Keane wasn’t impressed with the 53-year-old singling out Fernandes for praise, instead insisting that his focus should be on improving United’s record against top-half Premier League sides.

“He’s given credit to Bruno for passing on the ball for the penalty; absolute bloody rubbish. Absolute rubbish coming out with that,” Keane told Sky Sports after full-time.
