Aberdeen’s Conference League tie away to HJK Helsinki had to be suspended due to a snowball attack on the home goalkeeper.

The Group G clash had nothing riding on it as both teams had already been eliminated, but that didn’t stop 1,500 Aberdeen fans from travelling to the Finnish capital, which was covered in a blanket of snow. And they certainly made their presence felt after deciding to liven up proceedings by pelting HJK keeper Niki Maenpaa with snow as he attempted to take a goal-kick.

With Maenpaa not seeing the funny side, the referee stopped the game and consulted pitchside officials before asking Aberdeen players to urge their fans to halt the bombardment. After a hold-up of around a minute, the match resumed.

While the players weren’t impressed, fans back in the UK were amused: “Makes me oddly proud to be Scottish,” joked one. Another quipped: “Bloody snowflakes.”

A third declared: “Never been so proud of my city.” Another fan quipped: “Snow way, game’s gone.” A fifth declared: “It’s snowballs, get on with it. Wimps.”

However, some fans didn’t see the funny side, with one saying: “Some people just never grow up, do they. Throwing snowballs at the HJK goalkeeper. I mean, are they 5 years old? It's stupid and just ruining the game. Let the game play and just stand or sit and watch the match it's not hard. Grown up adults behaving like juveniles.”

After the resumption, Aberdeen fans were soon celebrating a goal as Duk made it 2-2. However, with snow continuing to rain down on Helsinki’s artificial surface, there was soon another stoppage in an attempt to clear the white stuff.

With snow covering the lines, the game was paused on 75 minutes with the players leaving the pitch while snow-clearing vehicles were deployed. After a short delay, the players eventually re-emerged from the dressing rooms to complete the match, which ended 2-2.
