If Team GB are to send a football team to the 2024 Olympic Games, then Scotland Women must lose to England in the Nations League.

The Lionesses take on the Scots in their final match of Group A. Sarina Wiegman's side kept the UK's hopes of sending a Team GB side to the Olympics alive when they came from 2-0 down to overcome the Netherlands 3-2 at Wembley Stadium.

However, as positive as the performance was, it has left England and Scotland in a rather odd predicament when it comes to their participation in the games next summer. A heavy victory for the European champions would actually benefit Scottish players who have their eye on representing Britain in Paris.

The Lionesses are currently second in Group A, while Scotland have already been relegated having only strung together two points out of a possible 15. England are level on points with the Netherlands, who are only above the World Cup finalists thanks to a marginally superior goal difference.

If Holland overcome Belgium in their final match, then England will need to better the Netherlands' score by at least four goals if they are to finish above the Dutch. However, England only need to beat Scotland to ensure a Team GB team is sent to the games.

This is because the top two teams in the Nations League will qualify for the competition. With England being the nominated nation from Great Britain, they need to reach the final of the competition, which will be played in 2024, to secure their sport.

Predictably, this strange scenario raised questions about Scotland benefiting from a loss to the Auld enemy. However, Scottish captain and Aston Villa ace Rachel Corsie blasted those suggesting the Scots may take it easy on England.

“A lot of people outside have spoken about it, and truthfully I think it is so disrespectful,” Corsie said in a press conference. “To have played for my country for as many years as I have – to know the girls that sit in there, the ones that want to be here, the ones who can’t be here through injury – I think it is absolutely outrageous to question anyone’s integrity and I think it is a huge insult to us."

She added: “I understand why the question is being asked, but for us, the motivation is playing for your country. It’s difficult to understand that if you’ve never experienced it but when you have, you don’t need extra motivation. It is absolutely the pinnacle of the sport to represent your nation so that will absolutely be the motivation tomorrow, to be pulling on the Scotland jersey.”
