Mikel Arteta will be banned from the touchline when Arsenal face Aston Villa at the weekend and fans are losing their heads about it.

The Spaniard lost his head too after Declan Rice netted a 97th-minute winner to seal a 4-3 win over Luton and move the Gunners temporarily five points clear at the top of the table. He leaped out of his technical area and took off down the touchline, arms flailing like Olive Oyl, to earn himself a yellow card for supposed over-celebrating.

The booking was his third of the season, meaning he'll now serve a one-match touchline ban which will be in effect when Arsenal travel to Villa Park on Saturday. Fans on social media couldn't believe it, with one person labelling the decision "utterly preposterous".

"How on Earth has Arteta got booked for celebrating a last minute winner? The world's gone mad," one X user fumed. Another said: "This is what they booked Arteta for, I'm going to lose my head."

A third added: "Good job we're clamping down on things like … celebrating last minute goals," while a fourth raged: "This is utterly preposterous. Wtf is Arteta meant to do in this situation? We'll kill football if you're not allowed to go a bit mad when a last minute winner goes in."

Arteta's ban aside it was an unforgettable evening for the north Londoners as they sealed a dramatic, champions-esque comeback at the end of a truly bonkers game at Kenilworth Road. Gabriel Martinelli gave Arsenal the lead on 20 minutes, but Gabriel Osho equalised for the home side five minutes later.

Another Gabriel, this time Jesus, restored Arsenal's lead just before half-time, but four minutes into the second half the scores were level again thanks to Elijah Adebayo. Ex-Chelsea man Ross Barkley then put Luton ahead for the first time, but another ex-Chelsea man, Kai Havertz, equalised for Arsenal three minutes later.

Join the Daily Star's WhatsApp for the sexiest headlines, showbiz gossip and lots more

Rice's injury time winner consigned the Hatters to their 10th league defeat of the season. They're currently 17th in the table, but will drop into the relegation zone if Everton beat Newcastle on Thursday. Arsenal, meanwhile, are five points clear after sealing their fourth win on the bounce, but their lead will be reduced to two points if Liverpool win at Sheffield United tomorrow.
