Arsenal vs Tottenham is one of English football's most-heated derbies in the calendar – and there's no love lost even at Christmas time.

So when the two teams rocked up to the Libertine nightclub in Mayfair, they may have been surprised to see rival players heading in for their respective festive parties.

Having each played games earlier on the same day, it was certainly a coincidence – and surprising to hear they were happy to share the venue.

Back in December 2015, Arsenal crowned off a strong week with their Christmas celebrations, having beaten Olympiakos in Athens on Wednesday to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League, and they then saw off Aston Villa 2-0 at Villa Park to go top of the Premier League table.

On the same Sunday (13th), Spurs must've felt like scrooges heading into The Libertine after losing in painful fashion to Newcastle just hour earlier. A 2-1 victory for the Toon at White Hart Lane was just Tottenham's second Premier League defeat of the season, leaving them in fifth.

The vibes for each set of players were obviously different as they headed into the venue, and Spurs' stars probably didn't feel like seeing their neighbours from north London.

Nevertheless, it didn't stop some of Mauricio Pochettino's men dressing up for the special occasion as they had a rare chance to let their hair down as a group. Christian Eriksen – now of Manchester United – was pictured arriving in a bow tie with a jazzy Christmas jumper draped over his shoulders on top of a white shirt.

Manchester City's Kyle Walker was in an all-black outfit, perhaps summing up the mood of Tottenham's players at the time eight years ago. And Aaron Lennon was also seen in attendance as he met up with his former team-mates, having played for Everton at the time.

For Arsenal, Mesut Ozil went with a casual look after the trek down from the Midlands earlier in the evening as he wore a droopy cardigan. And Per Mertesacker even arrived with his hood up, making the most of the more relaxed dress code (unusual for Mayfair).

Theo Walcott was dressed a great deal smarter for the evening out in the capital, and Danny Welbeck was also looking sharp.

The rivals spent the night mingling with one another and ultimately forgot their allegiances for a few hours, and it had the desired effect. Arsenal went on to beat Manchester City at the Emirates a few days later, while Spurs enjoyed a three-game winning run before the New Year off the back of their last-minute loss to Newcastle.

Come March, both teams were vying for the title, alongside underdogs Leicester, and they played out a 2-2 draw at White Hart Lane to leave the race wide open.

Tottenham became the Foxes' closest challengers but eventually they fell short, and even finished third a point behind second-placed Arsenal who pipped them on the final day, while Leicester won the league by 10 points in incredible fashion.
