Harry Maguire appeared to suffer a groin injury during the first half of Manchester United’s must-win Champions league clash against Bayern Munich, with Luke Shaw also leaving the field at half-time with an injury.

In what will be a big blow for Erik ten Hag, Maguire limped from the field after pulling up in some discomfort, holding his groin.

The 30-year-old, who had seemed to fall awkwardly sliding to clear a previous ball into the penalty area, received some treatment on the side of the pitch and managed to play on for several minutes before he was substituted for Jonny Evans.

While the nature of the injury is not yet confirmed, Maguire could now be a doubt for United’s crunch match against Liverpool at Anfield next weekend.

His absence will come as a big blow for United, with the defender having been a stand-out performer for the Red Devils in recent weeks.

He also proved pivotal in the first half, shutting down Leroy Sane who drove into the United penalty area with a mazy run, before Maguire stepped in to take the ball from him.

Shaw also seemed to be struggling with a hamstring injury at the end of the second half, and was replaced by Aaron Wan-Bissaka during the break.

The England left-back has only recently returned from a hamstring problem that had seen him miss large parts of the start of the season.

Speaking to TNT Sports at half-time, Rio Ferdinand said that things were going from bad to worse for Manchester United.

‘It’s going from bad to worse,’ he said. ‘We talked about injuries before and the manager not being able to pick his best side and there’s two players that have come back in and have gained a bit of confidence and they are two players that you’d want there at the moment and are gone. A big ask coming on as a substitute, but they’ve got to do it. Aaron Wan-Bissaka has to perform.’
