It’s been a miserable season for Manchester United – and one key stat goes some way to explaining why.

Erik ten Hag’s side are floundering in the Premier League, 10 points off leaders Liverpool and already out of Europe and the Carabao Cup. On Sunday, United face an ominous trip to Anfield, the scene of their 7-0 humiliation against their fiercest rivals last season.

It’s fairly clear that they are struggling at both ends, but one eye-catching stat is particularly stark. When it comes to shots to goals, United sit at the foot of the entire Premier League table.

The Red Devils have scored just 18 times from 143 shots on goal, with a conversion rate of just 7.41%. To put that into context, Newcastle and Manchester City both have a conversion rate more than double that of United, according to Data from Offers.Bet

The five teams that have had as many shots as United this season have all scored at least 15 times more. City and Liverpool are on at least double the amount, with Brighton, Tottenham and Arsenal 15 goals ahead of United, who have taken the exact same amount of shots on goal as Arsenal.

One of the few positives for United this season has been the form of Scott McTominay, who has scored an impressive five goals from 25 shots, giving him a conversion rate of 20%. Antony has taken more shots than any United player without scoring, having had 22 goalless efforts while Alejandro Garnacho has scored once – albeit spectacularly against Everton – from just 37 attempts. The individual conversion rates not making great reading for United’s frontmen and reads as follows:
