Manchester United are ready to take advantage of their humiliating Champions League Group A exit by overseeing a player exodus in the January transfer window, according to reports. Erik ten Hag will likely have to sell to buy this winter, and there are several stars in the shop window.

United played more games than any other club in Europe last season as they lifted the Carabao Cup, took part in the FA Cup final and reached the Europa League quarter-finals via the knockout play-off round.

Their jam-packed schedule has continued in the first half of the current campaign, with three games a week the standard for Ten Hag’s injury-stricken squad.

But United will enter New Year having been eliminated from the Carabao Cup and Champions League, leaving just the Premier League and FA Cup to play for.

With that, Ten Hag’s squad could now be considered bloated when you include the several stars currently unavailable.

And the Dutchman has reportedly green-lit a winter clear-out to refine his ranks and raise funds to strengthen areas in desperate need of upgrades.

According to ESPN, United expect multiple first-team departures in January due to Ten Hag’s eagerness to continue his rebuild.

It is the club’s final chance to generate a transfer fee for the Frenchman before his contract expiry next summer.

ESPN add that United are set to hold talks with Tottenham Hotspur over Sergio Reguilon, who has a break clause in his loan contract, allowing either club to send him back to north London.
