Formula One legend Michael Schumacher is "no longer the Michael we knew" according to ex-Ferrari and FIA chief Jean Todt.

During his storied racing career as Ferrari's frontman, Schumacher claimed seven F1 Drivers Championship titles. But, back in December 2013, the German driver suffered a tragic skiing accident which led to him being put into a medically induced coma.

The 54-year-old has not been seen in public since the horrifying accident, which happened a decade ago. Updates on his health have been sporadic, with Schumacher's family keen to protect his privacy.

However, from time to time, updates on the ex-Ferrari ace's health are provided by those within the inner circle, one of which is Todt, who served as Schumacher's team principal when the German won five consecutive F1 titles between 2000 and 2004.

Speaking to French outlet L'Equipe, Todt explained how he had visited Schumacher recently, telling Formula One fans across the globe that the seven-time world champions is sadly not the same as "he used to be" these days.

"Michael is here, so I don't miss him," Todt said after having visited the German at his house in Switzerland where he is cared for by a medical team and his wife, Corinna.

"[But he] is simply not the Michael he used to be. He is different and is wonderfully guided by his wife and children who protect him. His life is different now and I have the privilege of sharing moments with him. That's all there is to say.
