David Egan has signed a two-year deal to become first jockey for Amo Racing.

The 24-year-old is no stranger to riding in the purple silks of Amo, the venture of Kia Joorabchian, and was on Mojo Star when he belied odds of 50-1 to finish second in the 2021 Epsom Derby.

Egan has won big races around the world and Joorabchian wants to give him the platform to compete regularly at the highest level. King Of Steel, whom Roger Varian trained and Frankie Dettori rode to a remarkable win in the QIPCO Champion Stakes at Ascot in October, will be the flagship horse Egan gets to ride.

Joorabchian, who is fiercely ambitious, is adamant this new alliance will be successful. Kevin Stott, Amo’s last retained rider, left his role in August. ‘I am very pleased to announce David as our first jockey,’ said Joorabchian. ‘We’ve had a brilliant relationship over the years and used David consistently on our horses. It’s the perfect time to consolidate our team and having David on board will be a valuable addition.

‘David is a talented, ambitious jockey with experience at the top of the sport having won races of the highest calibre all over the world. Growing up as Roger Varian’s stable jockey has given him invaluable experience and maturity. I have tremendous confidence in this decision.

‘Having David on board for the next two years will help us develop long-term stability as a team. I’d also like to thank Roger Varian for his tremendous support in this decision.’

Egan, whose Classic successes have come via the Varian-trained Eldar Eldarov in the 2022 St Leger and the 2023 Irish St Leger, added: ‘I’m excited about this challenge.’
