Ipswich Town fans gave Norwich City owner Delia Smith an intimidating welcome with a thick fog of blue flares and a can of beer thrown at her car.

The Tractor Boys were hosting their bitter rivals in the first East Anglian derby since before the pandemic. It has been four years since the Canaries travelled down to Portman Road for one of the fiercest rivalries in English football.

There is extra venom in the contest as Town are currently on course to gain automatic promotion to the Premier League, while Norwich are only three points away from the Championship play-off places. With so much on the line as well as bragging rights, Ipswich fans ensured the Norwich players, directors and fans were made to feel like they were entering the Lions' Den.

There was a heavy police presence outside Portman Road. However, even they could do little as dozens of blue smoke canisters and red flares were lit either side of the road.

Norwich owner and world renowned chef Smith also found this out the hard way when the car she was in was hit with a can of Carlsberg that was thrown by some supporters.

It's believed her car followed the coach that was carrying the Ipswich players into the ground. Football fans on social media reacted to the chaotic scenes in their numbers.

One described the video as "box office", before another said: "Looks like a big European atmosphere. Credit to Ipswich and their fans, special buzz for them at the moment."

While Norwich were busy yo-yoing between the Premier League and the Championship, Ipswich were struggling in League One until they were promoted last season.

They have grown from strength to strength under Kieran McKenna, who currently has them in second place.

Despite the fact 14 years have passed since Ipswich's last win over Norwich, Canaries boss David Wagner said the statistics and history of their rivalry will go out the window.

"(The history) is not in my mind," the former Huddersfield Town manager said.

"It's about the game and this is exactly what counts. This game is not about the past, it's not about the future, it's about the present. We have to be there and we are preparing as well as we can.

"We are all in this business because we love and are passionate about the game. Then there is the cherry on the cake – that is certain games that every club has and, for us, that is this East Anglian derby."
